Guillermo Francella and Dani Rovira star in Playa de Lobos, premiering at the Málaga Film Festival

The psychological thriller, directed by Javier Veiga and shot entirely in Fuerteventura, will be presented out of competition as part of a tribute to Francella.
The upcoming psychological thriller Playa de Lobos, written and directed by Javier Veiga, will have its first screening out of competition at the 2025 Málaga Film Festival. The presentation coincides with the festival’s tribute to Guillermo Francella, who will receive the Retrospective Award at this year’s edition.
Starring Guillermo Francella (The Boss, The Secret in Their Eyes, The Clan) and Dani Rovira (Spanish Affair, 100 Metres), the film delivers a sharp blend of suspense and dark comedy, as two men with opposing worldviews clash in an increasingly unsettling encounter.
Set against the stark, cinematic landscape of Fuerteventura, Playa de Lobos introduces viewers to Manu, a laid-back beach bar worker, and Klaus, a stubborn tourist who refuses to vacate a sunbed at closing time. What begins as a trivial confrontation slowly escalates into a psychological standoff when Manu starts to suspect that Klaus isn’t who he claims to be.
“This film is about a collision between two people who can’t possibly understand each other,” says director Javier Veiga. “One shirks all responsibility, and the other is infuriated by that attitude. It’s a darkly comic take on the consequences of indifference.”
The supporting cast includes Antonia San Juan and Marta Hazas, who also serves as executive producer alongside Sara Fernández-Velasco. Though the film is still in post-production, the team saw Málaga as the ideal venue for its debut.
“We didn’t want to miss the opportunity to present the film here,” say Hazas and Fernández-Velasco. “Especially in a year when Francella is being honoured.”
Playa de Lobos is produced by MEDIOLIMÓN, Zebra Producciones (iZen Group), EPOS CINE, and Película PlayaDeLobos AIE, with support from RTVE and in collaboration with Pampa Films. Spanish distribution will be handled by Tripictures, with plans to expand into Latin American markets.
